SUMMARY:"Changing Hearts and Minds about Animals and Food" at Wesleyan University with Gene Baur
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Wesleyan for an inspiring talk by Gene Baur on changing perceptions about animals\, food\, the environment and our own health! \n4:30 PM | Room 100\, Frank Center for Public Affairs at Wesleyan University | Middletown\, CT \nWhat if there was ONE CHOICE that could solve many of the world’s problems? \nGene will discuss the interconnected topics\, touching on ethical\, environmental\, and social justice issues within our food system coupled with tangible solutions. \nFarming & Food Justice: Animal agriculture impacts equity and justice. Land access\, fair wages\, and food deserts are key challenges. Policies and community initiatives can create fairer systems. \nSuccession Planning: Succession planning helps farmers transition from animal agriculture to plant-based solutions\, balancing sustainability\, ethics\, and financial stability amid rising demand and environmental concerns. \nAnimal Advocacy & Sanctuaries: Ethical treatment of animals in our food system is a major concern. Sanctuaries provide a glimpse into alternative relationships with animals\, but how can they scale their impact? \nEnvironmental & Health Issues: Industrial animal agriculture drives climate change\, deforestation\, and biodiversity loss while harming health through pesticides\, processed foods\, pollution\, and antibiotic resistance. Sustainable solutions are needed. \nWho is Gene? \nPresident and Co-founder of Farm Sanctuary\, Gene Baur has been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by Time magazine. Since the mid-1980s\, he has worked to raise awareness about factory farming abuses and promoted a just and compassionate food system. \nA pioneer in undercover investigations and animal rescue\, Gene has visited hundreds of farms\, stockyards\, and slaughterhouses\, documenting the deplorable conditions. His pictures and videos exposing cruelty have aired around the world\, educating millions\, and his rescue work inspired an international farm sanctuary movement. \nGene was instrumental in passing the first U.S. laws prohibiting cruel farming practices\, and his work has been covered by major media organizations. He is the author of two bestsellers\, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food (Simon and Schuster\, 2008) and Living the Farm Sanctuary Life (Rodale\, 2015). Gene has a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from California State University\, Northridge and a Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics from Cornell University. \n\n \n4:30 PM | Room 100\, Frank Center for Public Affairs at Wesleyan University | Middletown\, CT
